About Me

Author: Elise Miwa

I always say I can’t cook. However, this isn’t exactly true. I can read and count, so I can follow most recipes. However, I don’t really feel like I understand cooking. My mom can whip up a meal from scratch without a recipe from whatever we have in our refrigerator. I still follow a recipe for mac n’ cheese. I would love to learn to cook better, and to understand what I am doing and what the ingredients are doing.

I love chemistry. My mother is a chemistry professor at Wellesley College, so I have been around chemistry my whole life. Though I took honors chemistry in high school, it has never been something that I wanted to pursue academically in any capacity, but I find it incredibly interesting. I feel that understanding the way that matter works on a molecular level enhances my life and my experience of the world. I would love to be able to extend that understanding to cooking as well.

In this course, I hope to improve both my cooking skills and my understanding of the chemical processes of cooking. I would love, by the end, to feel confident in my ability to cook without needing a recipe because I really understand the way that the food works. I also hope to refresh my basic chemistry knowledge and enjoy lots of good food!
