Analyzing the Nutrition Label on Mountain Rise Granola

Author: Mia Kaufman

Mountain Rise Granola, a granola recipe that was given to her husband, Glen, by Marcia. Mountain Rise Granola is granola made only with organic and all natural ingredients. I chose to analyze the nutrition label on this food item because it is considered a regular breakfast item in my household. With it’s sweet flavor and chunky texture, my mom and I can’t get enough of it. If this granola is really organic, I wanted to understand the nutritional facts and see the ingredients used in this food.

The nutrition label for Mountain Rise Granola’s Organic Granola looks like this:

This label demonstrates that there is less protein than there is sugars in one serving of granola. One thing in particular that I do not understand is the bottom portion of the nutrition label when it demonstrates the  Daily Values based on a 2,000 calories diet. I’m assuming that it is providing the amount total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, etc. based on whether it is a 2,000 or 2,500 calories diet. My question is, why do they only focus on 2,000 and 2,500 calorie diets? Are those the most common? I feel that the nutrition label on this particular product is very self explanatory.
