The item I chose to investigate was Wheat Thins. I chose Wheat Thins because they have been a staple in my home back in Massachusetts and are a staple in my apartment here at Muhlenberg.
I was always told that as the list of ingredients continues, the less of that ingredient there is. So, how much salt could there really be in there? Even though there seems to be quite a bit of sodium in the wheat thins. Also, how much of the salt is added versus how much is naturally in the ingredients?
Note: I didn’t count the ingredients that are in the parenthesis, if I should have, then there are more than 15. I just figured they were components of, say, the vegetable color.
Ingredients:
Ingredients: Whole Grain Wheat Flour, Unbleached Enriched Flour (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate {Vitamin B1}, Riboflavin {Vitamin B2}, Folic Acid), Soybean Oil, Sugar, Cornstarch, Malt Syrup (from Barley and Corn), Salt, Invert Sugar, Monoglycerides, Leavening (Calcium Phosphate and/or Baking Soda), Vegetable Color (Annatto Extract, Turmeric Oleoresin).
