Figuring Out the English Muffin Part 2

Author: Anna Waterhouse

Here is a closer look at my tried and true English muffin and its nutritional composition!

Ingredients:

ENRICHED WHEAT FLOUR [FLOUR, MALTED BARLEY FLOUR, REDUCED IRON, NIACIN, THIAMIN MONONITRATE (VITAMIN B1), RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), FOLIC ACID], WATER, FARINA, YEAST, SALT, SUGAR, CALCIUM PROPIONATE AND SORBIC ACID (TO PRESERVE FRESHNESS), SOYBEAN OIL, WHEAT GLUTEN, GRAIN VINEGAR, SOY LECITHIN, SOY, WHEY (MILK).

Proteins are sequences of amino acids and essential components of our daily diets.  A single Thomas English Muffin provides about 8% of the protein you should consume in a day, which is labeled as %Daily Value.  This protein is coming from the wheat flour, farina, yeast,  wheat gluten, soy, and the whey.  I can also tell from the information on the nutrition label that 36 calories per serving are from the protein in the English muffin.  I know that there are 9 calories per gram of protein, so it is just some basic math to figure out the contribution protein is making to the calorie count.

Fats are lipids composed of triglycerides and despite what you may have heard, they’re not all bad!  The fat in my daily English muffin is only contributing 2% of the daily value of fat that the FDA recommends I consume. The fat in my English muffin is coming from the soybean oil.  This fat is unsaturated fat because it is found in a liquid form because the odd shapes of the triglycerides don’t allow for many VDW attractions.  Only 9 calories of these English muffins comes from the fat content.

Here is some more nutrition information of my beloved English muffin!
